In 2005 Indonesia became the biggest producer of palm oil and surpassed Malaysia as the biggest produces of palm oil. Indonesia increased its production of palm oil in recent years to meet the international demand for palm oil.
The Foreign Agriculture Service (FAS) of the The United States Department of Agriculture estimated that Indonesia's total production of palm oil was approximately 18.0 million metric tons for year 2007/2008.
For year 2008/2009, the FAS expected that the total production of palm oil from indonesia has increased with approximately 1.5 million metric tons to a total production of 19.5 million metric tons.
For year 2009/2010, the FAS projects an increase of 1.25 million metric tons to a total production of 20.75 million metric tons per year.
